Deep Learning Applications in Manned Spaceflight

    ABSTRACT:

Human spaceflight is deeply rooted in close collaboration between Mission Control and flight crew. Ground control acts like a black box converting vehicle telemetry, crew natural language input, and 2D video into time management and problem-solving decisions, significantly contributing to crew and vehicle efficacy by delegating cognitive load.

As next-generation missions take humans deeper into the solar system, signal propagation delays threaten to hamper this effectively real-time cognitive tether. Deep learning technologies running locally aboard spacecraft can produce intelligent systems capable of making inference-based decisions like Mission Control without the time delay, while also augmenting crew-computer interfaces in ways not seen before.

This talk will discuss three applications leveraging deep learning on a first step toward this goal. The first is an Intelligent Personal Coach app for exercise feedback. The second is a neural network to identify external vehicle handrails in 2D images to assist crew members in identifying touch points suffering Micro Meteroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD) damage which threaten spacesuit structural integrity.

Finally, a method to generate rendered image data sets for training a neural network to identify 6 degree-of-freedom pose (used by an augmented reality procedure assistant for alignment without a QR code) will be presented.

If you are interested in a Data Science in Materials workshop, read on. For more information, email Prof. Jakoah Brgoch (jbrgoch@central.uh.edu)

From Jakoah:  I wanted to draw your attention to an upcoming workshop that focuses on using machine learning and data science to advance materials science and engineering. I am co-organizing this event to be held on the main campus of the University of Houston on April 5th at 6th in the alumni center. The goal of the workshop is the introduce the power of data science targeted at all levels of secondary education (community college through graduate students), as well as post doctoral research and even faculty members.

The 1.5-day workshop will have a hands-on component during the morning of April 5th, and then the afternoon of the first day there will be invited research talks. Saturday morning, April 6th,  the research talks will continue. We have tried to make registration for the event as inexpensive as possible ($50 for students, $100 for faculty), which also covers breakfast both mornings, lunch on Friday, and a reception happy hour on Friday evening. There is a website for the event: https://www.2019datamatsciworkshop.com/ that you can get more information as well as register for the event. I have also attached a flyer that you can feel free to share.

TcSUH PIs are asked to distribute this information to their students, who may really benefit from participating in this event. Registration is still open, but it is filling up fast.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to direct them my way.

    Thanks!   Jakoah (jbrgoch@central.uh.edu)

    "Transforming Supply Chains with Blockchain"

    Ramesh Gopinath, Ph.D.
    Vice President, IBM Blockchain Solutions

Blockchain will fundamentally transform all industries by virtue of it being a trusted and permissioned information sharing platform. In the traditional model, when companies do business with each other they share information via point to point communication leading to information silos, disputes and reconciliations. In this presentation, Gopinath will argue that supply chains will never be the same again! RSVP today!

    2019 Lustre User Group Conference

    2019 LUSTRE USER GROUP CONFERENCE

    Hosted by University of Houston

    MORE INFO

LUG 2019 at the University of Houston

Save the date for the Lustre User Group annual conference.

The 2019 Lustre User Group (LUG) conference will take place May 14-17 at the Student Center on the campus of the University of Houston, sponsored by UH’s HPE Data Science Institute (HPE DSI).  Mid-May is a wonderful time of year to visit Houston with pleasant daytime and evening temperatures that allows visitors to take full advantage of all the attractions that the nation’s 4th largest city has to offer.

May 14 features the Lustre Developers’ Day where leaders in the open source software determine its future direction. This year’s conference also features new user tutorial in the morning and day-to-day Lustre tutorial in the afternoon. In the evening, join us for our opening reception to meet other attendees who will be present for the 2 ½ day conference.

The LUG 2019 conference itself will begin on May 15.  OpenSFS is currently considering a half day New User session to run concurrently with other sessions for more seasoned users.  This year’s networking events include an evening at Houston’s premier craft brewery, St. Arnolds; a Tex-Mex dinner/bowling & pool at the UH Student Center game room; and a Friday afternoon visit to Space Center Houston (the Johnson Space Center’s official visitor center).  This will take place immediately after the conference closes and is available to those who extend their stay in Houston through Friday evening or later.

Why you should attend: As always, LUG 2019 will have technical sessions on the latest Lustre developments and best practices, and provide opportunities to share information, network, and collaborate with your peers.

About UH: With over 44,000 students, the University of Houston is also one of the most diverse colleges in the country.  Situated on 667 acres in Southeast Houston, just minutes from downtown, there is much to see and explore nearby, both on and off campus.  The LUG 2019 hotel, the University of Houston Hilton is located directly across the street from the conference venue and is home to the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management.  Take time to visit the contemporary Blaffer Art Museum, right on campus, where admission is always free.  There is also much to do downtown—visit Discovery Green, take in a Houston Astros baseball game at Minute Maid Park or visit one of the many venues for live music and entertainment the city has to offer.

How you can help: We want to hear from you. Please let us know if there are specific topics you’d like to see covered, if you’d like to participate in agenda development, or if you have an idea for an activity or event.

Support LUG 2019: Is your company interested in sponsorship? LUG19 brings together over 150 Lustre attendees. Sponsorship options include onsite presence, social events, meals, and speaking opportunities. Contact us to learn more.
